Defending champion CCSU picked as No. 1 in NEC women's soccer preseason poll

The Central Connecticut State University women’s soccer team has been picked for preseason No. 1 team in the Northeast Conference.

Announced last week, the three-time defending conference champions received nine votes in the preseason coaches poll to earn the top spot. Farleigh Dickinoson and Saint Francis University each received one vote in the poll.

In a conference-only schedule this past spring, CCSU went a clean 7-0 and advanced to the NCA Tournament.

The Blue Devils allowed only one goal to NEC opponents all season and won all major postseason conference awards.

Junior Roma McLaughlin was named the NEC Midfielder of the Year, posting four goals and two assists during the spring campaign to earn United Soccer Coaches All-America honors for the second straight season. Classmate Amanda McQuillan had six clean sheets in net, and was named the league's Goalkeeper of the Year.

Redshirt freshman Kelly Brady won the Rookie of the Year honors, leading the Blue Devils in scoring with three assists and four goals.

Seven-time NEC coach of the year Mick D'Arcy has led CCSU to 211 wins in his 21 seasons in New Britain, helping bring Central to nine NEC Conference championships. He has also led CCSU to a pair of wins in the NCAA Tournament.

The 2021 NEC Tournament will take place the at the top seed during the weekend of Nov. 5-7.
