Central Connecticut State University baseball (28-13) clinched its seventh Northeast Conference title Sunday, earning an automatic bid for the NCAA Div. II national tournament that will start in Eugene, Oregon on Friday, June 4.
The unranked Blue Devils will face No. 14 Oregon (37-14) at 5 p.m. to start their run at a College World Series appearance. The game will be televised on ESPN3.
The loser between Oregon and CCSU will face the loser of LSU (34-22) vs. Gonzaga (33-17), which will happen at 10 p.m. Friday. Should CCSU win, it’ll face the winner of the later match Saturday at a to be determined time.
CCSU has two guaranteed games, playing the first game of the regional and either the third or fourth. From then on, the fate of CCSU’s postseason run depends on whether it wins or loses. The schedule and who will face who will be determined on the first two games’ finals.
If the Blue Devils lose two games, they’ll be eliminated.
Head coach Charlie Hickey guided the Blue Devils to a 5-2 win over top-seeded Bryant in the seventh game of the NEC championship Sunday, coming out of an elimination bracket to take the conference title for the second time in as many seasons.
With the win, Central has won 25 or more games in a season for the 17th time under Hickey, who is the winningest coach in program history (577 wins in 22 seasons).
The last NCAA tournament victory for the Blue Devils came in the 2019 Regional, where they topped California with a 7-4 win.
