Toppin scores career-high 18 points as CCSU women's basketball tops LIU

NEW BRITAIN - The Central Connecticut State women’s basketball team is trying to end what has been a tough season with some positives.

With two games left in its season, Monday night was a good start.

Sophomore Forever Toppin scored a career-high 18 points and Ashley Chin added 11, while Emma McCamus and Ashley Berube scored 10 each as the Blue Devils beat LIU 71-57 to snap an eight-game losing streak.

CCSU (3-25, 2-15 NEC) shot just under 50 percent from the floor, hitting 27 of its 55 shots, including 6-of-13 from beyond the arc.

The Sharks (8-20, 7-10 NEC) got out to an early 8-4 lead before Toppin knocked down the first triple of the game to cut the lead to one with 4:32 to play in the first. LIU then scored six straight points before the Blue Devils responded with buckets from Bruna Vila Artigues and Chin to close out the first quarter. CCSU shot 6-for-12 (.500) in the opening 10 minutes.

A 9-4 run by the Blue Devils, with five points coming from Berube, gave CCSU a 23-20 lead midway through the second quarter. Overall, CCSU scored 22 points in the quarter.

The Blue Devils then opened the fourth sinking four of its five first shots, going on an 8-1 run to take a 58-52 lead with 5:25 left to play in the game. After the Sharks scored five points, CCSU responded with eight straight points of its own with triples by Toppin and McCamus. With 3:07 left on the clock, the Blue Devils held a 66-57 lead.

In the closing minutes, the Sharks went 0-for-7 from the floor and CCSU secured the game with free throws.

The Blue Devils will close out the 2019-2020 season on Thursday night against St. Francis Brooklyn. The team will honor its three seniors before tip-off of their final game.
