CCSU women's basketball falters in second half again, loses to Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Despite leading by eight at halftime, the Central Connecticut women’s basketball team was defeated by Wagner, 63-56, in a road game on Friday afternoon. The Seahawks shot 50 percent after halftime to rally.

CCSU junior scored a team-high 16 points and junior added 12 points.

The game was tied 56-56 with 1:22 to play, but Wagner scored the final seven points for the win.

Khaleah Edwards hit a three-pointer and Janelle Mullen followed with a layup to give Wagner (9-16, 5-9 NEC) its first lead of the second half at 44-43 with 2:07 left in the third quarter. Junior answered with back-to-back buckets to give Central (2-24, 1-14 NEC) a 47-44 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

Junior scored a jumper at the buzzer to tie the game at 16-16 after the first quarter.

CCSU held Wagner scoreless for over three minutes and outscored the Seahawks, 10-2, to build a 27-20 lead in the second quarter. Berube hit a layup to give the Blue Devils a seven-point lead at the 5:46 mark. Sophomore made a three-pointer with just over a minute to go in the half to make it 37-29 at the break.

Berube added a game-high eight rebounds for CCSU. Forker, McCamus and junior all had four assists.

CCSU next plays at Merrimack on Feb. 29.
