NEW BRITAIN – Just hours after the women’s team picked up its first conference win of the season, the CCSU men’s basketball team made sure there would be a joint celebration by the time the day was over.
The Blue Devils outscored Wagner 55-40 in the second half to come away with an 86-76 win at home on Saturday, securing the team’s first NEC victory of the season. The win also ended an eight-game losing skid.
Sophomore Ian Krishnan led CCSU with 18 points thanks to a strong 3-point shooting performance, connecting on five of his eight shots from beyond the arc. Freshman Jamir Reed came off the bench and dropped 17 points, while shooting 5-for-6 from the field.
Trailing by five at halftime, the Blue Devils mounted their comeback from the free throw line, getting to the charity stripe for 19 shots in the final 20 minutes and sinking 14 of them. Before sealing the game at the foul line, CCSU benefited from timely 3-pointers. A triple from Tyler Rowe tied the game at 47 apiece with 13:47 left in the second half, and clinging to a one-point lead minutes later, Myles Baker drained a three to open up a four-point lead for the Blue Devils.
A layup from Rowe midway through the second half extended the lead to seven before a 3-pointer from Reed made it a nine-point game with five minutes left. When the Seahawks pulled to within two with 2:15 to go, Rowe stepped up with another big three to push the lead back to five on the ensuing possession for CCSU, which sealed the game from the free throw line in the closing minutes to get the much-needed conference victory.
The Blue Devils as a whole enjoyed one of their best shooting performances of the season, finishing 45.8 percent from beyond the arc, and committed just seven turnovers.
CCSU will look to start its first winning streak of the season when it travels to Saint Francis on Thursday.
