NEW BRITAIN - Dave Kelly, an assistant coach for the CCSU men’s soccer team since 2013, has been named the interim head coach of the program for the 2020 season following the retirement of legendary head coach Shaun Green back in December.

Interim athletic director Tom Pincince made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon.

“Dave’s wealth of coaching experience makes him an excellent choice to assume the head coaching role of our men’s soccer team,” Pincince said in a statement. “He is well-known within the soccer community in Connecticut and we look forward to him being a positive mentor for our student-athletes during the upcoming season.”

Kelly has spent seven seasons with the Blue Devils, and was part of the coaching staff when the team won the NEC regular season championship back in 2013. Prior to arriving at CCSU, he was an assistant with Southern Connecticut State University from 2011 to 2013, while also serving in assistant roles at local programs like Hartford, Quinnipiac and Trinity College as far back as 2001.

Kelly played professionally in the A-League (now the USL Championship) Professional Soccer League and in the National Professional Soccer league. He played collegiately at the University of Maine, where he graduated in 1990.

“I am honored and excited to assume leadership of the men’s soccer program at CCSU,” Kelly said. “I look forward to the challenge of helping build a successful program on and off the field. We can’t wait to get to work preparing for the season.”
