NEW BRITAIN - Central Connecticut State men’s basketball head coach Donyell Marshall always tries to have a well-rounded non-conference schedule to have his team ready for NEC play.
The Blue Devils will certainly have one this season.
CCSU’s 13-game non-conference slate features opponents from the ACC, America East, Atlatnic-10, Big East, Big Ten, Ivy League and Pac-12 conferences the school announced Thursday.
Among those opponents will be St. John’s, Boston College, Penn State and Arizona State. The Blue Devils are also slated to appear in the Air Force Reserve Tip-Off Tournament, which will include two games at Mohegan Sun Arena.
“We're looking forward to playing a challenging schedule and having the chance to play in the Tip-Off Tournament at Mohegan Sun,” Marshall said in a statement. “With a talented, young team this season, our squad will have a chance to grow and improve throughout the non-conference schedule before turning our focus to the Northeast Conference schedule.”
Marshall is 31-61 over his first three seasons as the program’s head coach, including 11-20 (5-13 NEC) in 2018-19. The former UConn standout is still looking for his first winning season with CCSU.
The Blue Devils will begin the regular season Nov. 5 with a home game against Hartford. The teams are in the midst of a five-game agreement, with the series set to head back to Chase Arena in 2020-21 to wrap up the agreement. CCSU won 75-68 last season.
The Blue Devils will then have one of their toughest stretches of the season, one that will have the team play three straight road games. Four days after its opener, CCSU travels to New York to face off against St. John’s (Nov. 9).
The next two games will be part of the Tip-Off Tournament and will play at Arizona State on Nov. 14 before heading back east to play UMass on Nov. 16. The final two games of the tournament will take place in late November at Mohegan Sun Arena as part of a four-game slate featuring all eight participating teams. CCSU will face Vermont on Nov. 23 and takes on either Rider or Columbia on Nov. 24.
In between the Air Force Reserve Tip-Off Tournament, the Blue Devils will return to New Britain and host New Hampshire on Nov. 19.
Following a road game at UMass Lowell on Dec. 1, CCSU will return to Detrick Gymnasium to host Maine on Dec. 7. The Blue Devils will then play three more road games with trips to ACC-opponent Boston College on Dec. 15, the Ivy League’s Dartmouth on Dec. 18 and State College to square off against Penn State on Dec. 20.
The team’s non-conference schedule will conclude with a home game against Division-III Connecticut College on Dec. 29 before beginning the NEC slate in 2020.
General public tickets for the Air Force Reserve Tip-Off Tournament will go on sale Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. via all Ticketmaster outlets and the Mohegan Sun Arena box office. For more information, visit www.halloffametipoff.com .
