UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa- The first two quarters proved to be pivotal for the CCSU womenâ€™s basketball team in the loss to Penn State on Monday.
CCSU was outscored 46-31 in the first two quarters before settling down and playing strong basketball in the final two quarters with a point differential of just two.
Facing an 18-point deficit with less than six minutes to go in the second quarter, the Blue Devils battled and brought the game within four points at 50-46 with the clock winding down in the third quarter at 3:33.
While they brought it closer, the Nittany Lions didnâ€™t let them come back in the 83-66 loss for CCSU.
The three point shot kept the Blue Devils in the game as they hit 12 out of the 36 attempted.
On the defensive end, CCSU held the Nittany Lions to just six three pointers on 21 attempts.
Other than that facet of the game, not much else was positive for the Blue Devils.
As a team, the Blue Devils had 20 turnovers compared to just nine turnovers for the Nittany Lions.
On the defensive end of the floor, Penn State had a weapon in Amari Carter.
Her 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists led the Nittany Lions.
The Penn State bench outscored the CCSU bench 35-10 and hit 21free throws compared to just eight for the Blue Devils.
Andi Lyon paced the way for the Blue Devils in the game 25 points while Ashley Berube led in rebounds with 10.
Lyon hit four of the 12 three pointers for CCSU in the game.
Other Blue Devils in double digit scoring were Kiana Patterson and Morgan Johnson.
Patterson finished with 13 while Johnson had 11.
CCSU out-rebounded Penn State 44 to 39.
It was good experience for the Blue Devils and the fight shown in the final two quarters is a positive moving forward.
With the loss CCSU remains winless on the season at 0-4 while Penn State stays undefeated at 5-0.
