BRISTOL – The “Halloween Spooktacular” returns to Rockwell Park Saturday, offering “trunk or treating,” costume contests, scarecrow displays, storytelling and a screening of the 2019 version of “The Addams Family.”

The city's free, family Halloween event, sponsored by the Bristol Parks, Recreation, Youth and Community Services Department, will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at the amphitheater at Rockwell Park Saturday. Children are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes. All ages are welcome.

Parks and Rec Deputy Superintendent Sarah Larson said the event "combines all the fun of a Halloween party with trick-or-treating."

"It's great to see all the kids having a blast together in a safe and controlled environment," she said.

Department Community Engagement Coordinator Erica Benoit said volunteers from the community have signed up to park their vehicles at the park, decorate them and fill them with candy. Youngsters will walk between them and pick out treats between 5 and 7:30 p.m.

Spooky storytelling will be held from 6 to 6:30 p.m. for children ages 5 to 8 and between 7 and 7:30 p.m. for "tweens."

The winners of the best costume contest and best scarecrow displays at the event will be announced between 7:30 and 7:40 p.m. Those who wish to enter the costume contest are encouraged to visit the Parks and Rec table upon arrival.

Prizes will be awarded for "spookiest costume," "best look-a-like," "best group costume," "most creative" and "best overall." The winners will be recognized with awards at the event and featured on the department's website and social media pages.

At 7:40 p.m., there will be a screening of the 2019 animated version of "The Addams Family," which is rated PG.

“We’re switching it up a bit this year," said Benoit. "Last year, we hosted a drive-in movie across from City Hall. The movie was a huge hit so we’re bringing that back again, as well as storytelling and a costume contest. During the evening, attendees will be able to walk the amphitheater, exploring and voting on their favorite scarecrows, listening to spooky stories, and collecting sweets from the trunk or treat."

Benoit said every year there is something new to enjoy at the "Halloween Spooktacular."

"It's a safe, family friendly environment," she said. "It's easy for parents to keep an eye on their children while they enjoy all of the Halloween fun."

The Rockwell Park amphitheater is located off of the Dutton Ave. parking lot entrance.

In the event of inclement weather, the event will be cancelled. No pre-registration is necessary.
