BRISTOL – Shepard Meadows Equestrian Center invites the community to join them for an outdoor “Farmyard Party” Sept. 18.

During the event guests can visit with the horses, tour the facility and enjoy barbecue, music and silent auctions.

Shelly Pope, executive director of Shepard Meadows Equestrian Center at 733 Hill St., said that the Farmyard Party, which debuted last year, was a fun, relaxed time outdoors for everyone involved. This year, it will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on the 26-acre farm Sept. 18. It’s a casual attire, adults-only event limited to ages 21 and up with a cash bar.

“Last year we were able to have a maximum of 100 people and we’re looking forward to having more people this year,” said Pope. “Everyone had a great time sitting on the bales of hay and at the picnic tables, visiting with the horses and walking the trail. It’s a very casual event, people can come in their jeans, and you don’t have to worry about being out all night.”

The event is a major fundraiser for Shepard Meadows Equestrian Center, helping them to care for their horses and supporting programs including therapeutic riding, horsemanship equine-assisted learning. Shepard Meadows Equestrian Center’s programs also support military veterans, youth development, horseback riding and equine-assisted psychotherapy.

“Fundraising is particularly important given the pandemic and when our services are in high demand,” said Pope. “We have seen a lot of inflation – hay went from $5 to $15 last year because the summer before was a drought. This summer has been the opposite – we can’t find enough dry days.”

Last year, despite the limitations in place due to the pandemic, the Farmyard Party raised $35,000 for Shepard Meadows Equestrian Center. This, she said, was a big success as it provided about a third of the Center’s funding for the year.

The Farmyard Party is sponsored by The Oakbridge Group.
