BRISTOL -- A Pine Street man was charged over the weekend during a gun incident that police say could have turned out much worse.

Police said Christopher Perkins, 43, of 288 Pine St., accidentally fired his handgun while he was cleaning it late Friday. The bullet went through his floor and into the apartment below his unit, according to police.

Although the resident in the lower apartment was home at the time, police said she was not struck. No injuries were reported.

Police said the incident was not reported until the next day.

Police also said things could have turned out much worse, adding that it was very fortunate that no one was hurt.

Perkins, Lt. Geoffrey Lund said, “was completely cooperative” with the investigation. He also agreed to surrender his gun while the case is adjudicated.

Perkins faces one count of illegal discharge of a firearm. He was issued a summons to appear in New Britain Superior Court on March 1.
