WATERBURY -- A Bristol man was killed in a wrong-way crash Wednesday night in Waterbury, according to state troopers.

State police said Him Heap, 51, of 92 Simpkins Drive, Bristol, was pronounced dead after being taken to Waterbury Hospital.

Heap was involved in a crash around 10 p.m., when he was traveling south on Route 8 near the Exit 36 off-ramp.

State police said Cheshire resident Jose Manuel Portillo-Martinez, 27, was driving north in the southbound lanes when he and Heap were involved in a “head-on style collision.” Troopers noted in their report that weather conditions were clear, the road was dry and there was a light flow of traffic.

Portillo-Martinez was also hospitalized for serious injuries, having been taken in an ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital. His condition Thursday was unclear.

The crash is still being investigated. Anyone with information has been asked to contact Trooper Jonathan Wildman at 203-267-2200 and reference case number 2000342656.
