Bristol has another small increase in COVID-19 positive cases; state hospitalizations has big drop

There was a large drop in patients hospitalized with COVID-19, while New Britain had yet another large increase in positive cases Friday, according to data released by state health officials.

There was a reported drop of 76 COVID-19 patients from the day before, for a total of just 740 across the state.

The state death toll did increase by 55 Friday, and there have now been a total of 3,637 state residents who have lost their lives to coronavirus-related illness. Hartford County has had 1,155 deaths from COVID-19, second most among counties. Fairfield County has the most with 1,195, while New Haven County is third with 888.

While the death rate is second, Hartford County is third in total COVID-19 cases, with 1,298. New Haven County has almost 1,300 more cases than Hartford County, but less resulting in death.

Locally, New Britain had nearly 50 additional residents reported to have coronavirus over the past 24 hours, for a total of 871. That’s 46 more than a day prior. The city has the 10th most positive cases in the entire state, and is now closing in on Hamden, which has 900 positive cases as of Friday.

No other area city or town even reached double-figures, according to the latest report from the state.

Newington was the highest among the group, with an additional six residents who have tested positive for COVID-19. The town now has 333 positive cases, third most in the area.

Southington was next with an additional three positive cases, for an overall total of 288.

Bristol had just two additional residents who have tested positive for coronavirus over the past day. The city now has 516 total cases, second most in the area.

Berlin and Plainville both had one additional positive case to report. Berlin now has 137 total residents who have tested positive for coronavirus, while Plainville is up to 132.

Plymouth remained the same as the day before, and continues to stand at 64 positive cases in all.

State-wide, Bridgeport remained the hardest hit among cities or towns with residents who have tested positive for coronavirus. Bridgeport has 3,099 and is followed by Stamford (3,066), New Haven (2,303), Hartford (2,073), Norwalk (1,942), Waterbury (1,798) and Danbury (1,660). Those are the only cities or towns over 1,000 total positive cases.

There was 5,881 total virus tests reported Friday, with 432 coming back positive.
