BRISTOL - A city man was charged Wednesday with having an illegal sexual relationship with an underage girl.

Angel Reyes-Colon, 21, of 174 Davis Drive, turned himself in on charges of second-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor.

Court documents say the charges stem from a sexual encounter with a 15-year-old girl.

During his arraignment hearing Wednesday, court officials said the victim and her family do not want Reyes-Colon prosecuted, as they “have a great relationship.” The victim also did not want a protective order barring contact between her and Reyes-Colon.

Judge John Cronan issued an order that prohibits Reyes-Colon from contacting the victim or coming within 100 yards of her while the case is pending.

Cronan appeared agitated by the notion that the victim’s family is OK with a sexual relationship between Reyes-Colon and the 15-year-old, saying a sexual relationship “cannot happen” between the two because of the state’s laws.

“The state prosecutes cases, not the victim or the family,” Cronan said.

“He was very cooperative with police,” Peter Matthews, a public defender representing Reyes-Colon, said during the hearing. “He was cooperative with the investigation.”

Prosecutors added that Reyes-Colon “essentially” confessed to the elements required for the charges he faces. He posted $10,000 bond shortly after the arraignment and is due back in court on July 12.
