BRISTOL - Bristol Hospital has been getting straight A’s in safety grades since fall 2017.

The hospital received its latest “A” grade Wednesday from the Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers, Bristol Hospital said in a statement.

“Bristol Hospital is one of a handful of Connecticut hospitals to receive this rating and we have received straight A’s from The Leapfrog Group since the fall of 2017,” said Kurt A. Barwis, president and CEO of Bristol Health. “This is an accomplishment that we should all take pride in, and this is a reflection of our staff’s commitment to providing safe and quality care to our patients and families.”

The hospital’s latest “A” rating is based on the spring, as the grades are given out each spring and fall. The grades, made on an A through F scale, are assigned to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care.

“Hospitals that earn an ‘A’ grade are making it a priority to protect patients from preventable medical harm and error,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate hospital leaders, board members, staff, volunteers and clinicians who work so hard to earn this A.”

Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 hospitals across the country twice a year.

“The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public,” Bristol Hospital said in its statement.
