BRISTOL - Six local high school and middle school students were honored with the CABE Student Leadership Awards recently.

The recipients are: Olivia Rajotte and Jacob Nelson, of Bristol Central High School; Sarah Snedeker and Kiana Ouellette, of Northeast Middle School; Mason Coco and Gabriela Poniat, of Greene-Hills K-8 School.

The awards program was developed by the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) to give local boards of education the opportunity to recognize student achievement and potential.

Students are nominated by their school principal, based on the following leadership skills: Willingness to take on challenges, capability to make difficult decisions, concern for others, ability to work with others, willingness to commit to a project, diplomacy, ability to understand issues clearly, and ability to honor a commitment.

Superintendent Susan Moreau had the students address the board recently and share things they did as leaders in their schools. Rajotte said she is president of her school’s National Honor Society and vice president of her class, Nelson said he is president of his schools’ Interact community service club and the captain of the golf team, and the younger students mentioned activities like helping out teachers and volunteer for clubs at their schools.

Board Chairman Chris Wilson thanked the students for their efforts. “You represent the best of the best and we are so proud of you in the Bristol public schools,” he said.
