BRISTOL - One person was taken to the hospital Thursday afternoon after crashing into a utility pole, snapping it at the base.

Police, firefighters and medics responded to the area of 173 Sycamore St., at about 4:30 p.m., on the report of an accident. The driver, a male, complained of chest and head injuries.

The vehicle sustained heavy damage, as its bumper was completely separated and the front end caved in where it struck the pole. The pole was snapped near its base. It was still standing but with the risk that it would come down and pull down the accompanying utility wires with it. This caused police and firefighters to close off part of the street for some time until it could be repaired. The driver of the vehicle was taken in an ambulance to Bristol Hospital for injuries that were not described as life-threatening.

The vehicle had to be towed from the scene.
