BRISTOL - The Bristol Brass and Wind Ensemble will draw middle school students into the action at “Play with the Pros,” an interactive concert on Tuesday.
“We are doing kind of a concert-workshop with band students from all the different middle schools in the city of Bristol,” said Rich Theriault, the ensemble’s musical conductor and former Bristol Eastern High School band director.
About 95 students will perform symphonic music from the original Star Wars movies with 70 professional musicians, Theriault said. The ensemble is preparing for the concert by writing down the main themes of the music for the students to play.
“The students will play the theme song with the band at their skill level, and that will be integrated into the symphonic piece the band plays,” Theriault said.
The ensemble has regularly put on concerts around the city, but this is the first time the ensemble will have this kind of performance with students.
“The students will be sitting in the same sections as my band. We will be one massive group,” Theriault said. “The music directors at the school are excited and are helping organize it. A few directors are already in the band.”
Some students from John F. Kennedy Middle School in Southington were also invited to take part in the performance with their teacher, Tim Johnson, a trumpet player in the ensemble, Theriault said.
While the students and professionals are together, two of the ensemble members will discuss with the students why they are still playing music, why it is so important in their lives and why they are so enthusiastic about it.
“Usually kids at the middle school age make the decision to keep playing when they get into high school and college,” Theriault said. “We are hoping that this event will encourage them to continue to play their instruments as part of their lives and future.”
The concert is open to the public, and is slated for Feb. 13, at 7 p.m., in the gym at West Bristol School, 500 Clark Ave.
