BRISTOL - Travel basketball teams from around the state filled the Boys & Girls Club of Bristol Family Center Wednesday for its Holiday Basketball Tournament.
Steve Beecher, the club’s athletic director, explained that the tournament runs through Saturday. The club hosted the tournament, and there was a concession stand set up in the club that was sponsored by Wendy’s of Bristol.
Fifty-six boys and girls travel basketball teams from 27 Connecticut towns will be playing 96 games total on the two basketball courts. He added that five of the teams are from Bristol.
Teams paid an admission fee and were matched up with other teams at the same skill level, he explained. The games were scheduled throughout the four days from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“Every team is guaranteed a certain amount of games,” he said, explaining that the players range from fourth to eighth grade.
Beecher said that the club is fortunate to be able to use the gym to host the tournament because it gives the club the chance to “show off” the facility.
“One of the greatest things for me to witness is all the friendships that come through the doors,” Sarah Lucian, marketing manager at the club, said.
“So many kids bond through being on the court together and end up having meaningful friendships that last a lifetime. I’m personally really grateful to be part of such a positive place for kids,” Lucian added.
