BRISTOL - A city man has pleaded guilty in connection with the brutal assault of a man in January.
Michael Levesque, 27, of 186 Gridley St., accepted a plea deal Tuesday in Bristol Superior Court. He pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree assault and admitted to violating his probation.
Levesque is expected to be sentenced to 23 months in prison at a hearing in December. His case was continued until then.
Levesque, who is free on $55,000 bond, was sentenced in July 2016 to 15 days in jail and 18 months’ probation after being convicted of first-degree reckless endangerment and operating under the influence. He was charged with violating his probation after his arrest in January.
According to the police report, officers responded to the area of Stevens Street and Jerome Avenue on Jan. 12, at about 1 a.m., on the report of an assault. The victim, a 35-year-old man, told police he was jumped by two men and that a woman he knows set him up. He was bleeding severely from the head.
The victim said he was picked up in an SUV driven by a female acquaintance earlier that morning. After driving around for a bit, the man said, he noticed two men hiding in the trunk area of the SUV. He confronted the woman about it and left the vehicle in the area of Mines Road.
The victim said the two men chased him and tackled him before kicking and punching him multiple times, according to the report. He called police after the men left.
Shortly thereafter, officers found the suspect vehicle on Irving Street. Michael Levesque, Matthew Levesque, 30, and a woman were detained while police investigated. While he was detained, police said, Matthew Levesque admitted to taking part in the assault, alleging that he did it because the victim had hit the woman inside the vehicle and has been stalking her.
The 35-year-old victim was taken to St. Francis Hospital, where he received nine stitches to close lacerations on the right side of his head. He said he did not wish to press charges against the woman he believed set him up.
Police found a pair of brass knuckles in the vehicle that they believe Michael Levesque used during the assault.
Matthew Levesque, of 179 Bayberry Drive, has also been charged. His case is still pending.
