Robert Rosol, owner of Martin Rosol's, dies at 57

Robert C. Rosol, the third generation to run his family’s storied meat packing business, died Friday. He was 57.

Rosol was the owner and president of Martin Rosol’s Inc., an area mainstay of nearly 90 years renowned for its authentic smoked and fresh meats and a variety of other homemade products.

“He was a great guy,” said Tim Stewart, president of the Greater New Britain Chamber of Commerce and a longtime family friend. “He worked with his father for a long time and then carried on the Rosol family’s long tradition of giving back to the community.”

Rosol graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in 1977 and Nichols College four years later. He subsequently joined the family business, working alongside his father, the late Eugene Rosol.

Eugene had joined the company, then run by his father, Martin, in 1946 after returning home from service in World War II. He remained active with the Grove Street plant and store as its chief executive officer until his death in 2010.

The fourth generation of Rosols currently operate the business. Timothy Rosol, Robert’s son, serves as plant manager.

Robert Rosol is survived by his wife of 33 years, Sarah (Stepeck) Rosol and their children, Timothy C. Rosol, Theodore M. Rosol and Shawna A. Rosol; his brother Richard Rosol and his wife, Karen, of New Britain; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 110 Franklin Square, New Britain. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1755 Stanley St. Burial will follow St. Mary’s Cemetery.
