BRISTOL – The Berlin baseball team notched their first victory of the season, ruining the season-opener for host Bristol Eastern in the process Monday afternoon. The Redcoats won 5-0.
Redcoats pitcher Harrison Lombardi was untouchable as he tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out eight and keeping the Lancers’ hitters off balance.
It was Berlin’s first win of the season after dropping its first three games.
“It's always nice to win,” Berlin coach Leo Veleas said. Veleas said the team will progress as they only have three returning starters and was pleased as his starting pitcher "threw strikes,” and had some well-placed hits to back up the defense.
“Being off the field for a week and now seeing live pitching, we struggled at the plate,” Bristol Eastern coach Steve Gaudet said. “Defensively I thought we played pretty well, but we have to be more aggressive at the plate, and be better early in the count.”
The Lancers are returning just two starters this season and look to notch their first win against Tolland on the road Wednesday.
