PLAINVILLE - Taylor DeMarest didn’t really know her potential until after she swam the 500 freestyle Tuesday afternoon.

The distance swimmer cut six seconds off her best time to not only land her a first-place finish during the Bristol Eastern’s 101-85 loss to Plainville, but she qualified for her first ever Class L state meet.

“It makes me feel really good because I’m only a freshman,” DeMarest said. “It makes me feel good knowing that my swimming is right on track and right where I want to be.

DeMarest swam in four events on Tuesday. She anchored the Lancers’ first-place 200 freestyle relay team (2:06.38), claimed second in the 200 freestyle (2:14.98), took first in the 500 freestyle and lead of the second-place 400 freestyle relay team (4:13.85).

“She is great at distance and very consistent,” Bristol Eastern coach Alyson Phelan said. “She’s proven to be a very strong competitor as a freshman.”
