BRISTOL - Trailing Plainville 13-2 late in the first quarter the Bristol Eastern girls basketball team was struggling offensively as the Blue Devils controlled the tempo of the game.

The Lancers would close out both the first and second quarters on 6-0 runs and Bristol Eastern didn’t look back as it led the entire second half en route to a 56-45 win over Plainville Saturday afternoon.

“I thought the big thing was that we didn’t get in transition first because we didn’t get the rebounds,” Bristol Eastern head coach Tony Floyd said. “I thought once we started to settle down and get rebounds we got out and filled the lanes really well… We were able to get in our secondary break off our transition and run our offense right off the break and we got some good looks. That was the key, especially in us catching up and getting ahead.”

Plainville’s 13-2 start was behind seven points from Caitlin Barker. Barker put in a layup, two free throws and a 3-pointer to get the Blue Devils going.

As the first quarter clock was winding down Bristol Eastern got six points, four coming from Miranda Janick and a basket from Jordan Ouellette.

The Lancers trailed 13-8 at the end of the first quarter.

“We just got to be more consistent,” Floyd said. “At times they show glimpses of doing an excellent job. They just play, execute and they fill lanes. We just haven’t put enough quarters together. Today I think we put three quarters together.”

To begin the second, Bristol Eastern continued its run, extending it to eight as Cheyenne Sargent had an offensive rebound that she put back in to bring the Lancers within three.

Plainville’s Amiyah Peters stopped the Bristol Eastern run at eight with a basket of her own.

With the score 17-10 the Lancers went on a 8-0 run of their own. Cali Doyon hit a pair of free throws, Avery Arbuckle had an offensive rebound put back, Janick scored on a fast break and Janick followed it up with a short range jumper in front of the hoop to give Bristol Eastern its first lead of the game.

After the runs by each team it was back and forth for a few minutes.

The score was tied up midway through the second quarter at 24-24.

With time halftime approaching the Lancers went on a 6-0 run to close out the half.

Ouellette scored four of the six points and Sage Scarritt had a layup.

In the third quarter Bristol Eastern continued its control of the game.

With the score 37-30, Ouellette knocked down a free throw, Janick hit a layup, Maghini knocked down a short jumper and the Lancers lead was extended to 42-30.

Down 51-35 in the fourth Plainville tried its best to make a comeback attempt as the Blue Devils went on a 7-0 run, five points coming from Barker.

Although, the attempt fell short for the Blue Devils as time ran out.

Barker had 32 points for Plainville, a game-high. Other than her 32 points offense was hard to come by as just three other players scored for the Blue Devils.

“I had four kids score,” Plainville head coach Jessica Neuweiler said. “That’s a huge difference for us. Izzy [Lozefski] brings a lot. Not just those 10 points but that leadership mentality. Being a senior captain and being seasoned. We miss that. I’m hoping that she’ll be back soon. Those ankle injuries linger a little bit.”

For Bristol Eastern nine players were in the scoring column.

Janick led the way with 17 points, Maghini added 13 and Ouellette had 12 for the Lancers.

“It was kind of like a redemption game,” Maghini said about playing the Blue Devils again after losing to them earlier this year. “Knowing that we can play to our highest level and it feels good to get the win.”

Bristol Eastern moved to 6-7 on the season with the win and will host Glastonbury on Monday at 6:45 p.m.

Plainville fell to 8-4 on the season and will host Northwest Catholic Monday night at 6:45 p.m.
