STRATFORD - The Bristol Central softball team claimed their biggest win of the season in a 4-1 CIAC Class LL state tournament semifinal victory over Danbury on Monday at DeLuca Field.

The Rams will be making their first trip to the state final since making back-to-back appearances in 2004 and 2005.

All-State pitcher Sophia Torreso set the tone for the Rams by striking out the side in the top of the first inning. The right-hander pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on two hits with 12 strikeouts against the top-seeded Hatters.

Torreso has posted double-digit strikeouts in eight of her 12 appearances on the mound. The junior feels that her drop curve has been her most effective pitch.

“There’s a lot of pitchers that come inside-outside, and I really like to change it vertically,” said Torreso. “I love to throw a rise ball then come back with a drop curve.”

Sam Sklenka got things started for the offense with a 1-out single on a bunt. Lorelei Stancavage grounded out to first to move Sklenka to second. Leah Sklenka followed with a single to center that brought home her sister and opened the scoring in the top of the first.

In the second, Sarah Romano led off with a walk, advanced to second on a single from Kaley Laird and scored on RBI single from Stancavage.

Following a pair of scoreless inning, Bristol Central added to its lead in th top of the fifth.

A leadoff single from Sam Sklenka followed by a walk for Torreso put two on with 1 out. All-conference pitcher Alex Sciarretto hit a fly ball to right that scored Sklenka for a 3-0 lead and Sciarretto made it 4-0 when she scored on a wlld pitch in the sixth.

Danbury pitcher Haley Pucci retired the Rams in order in the top of the seventh on two groundouts and a strikeout.

Torreso would allow a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh to Kaylee Drago and recorded the final out of the game on infield groundout.

Bristol Central will play either No. 3 Fairfield Ludlowe or No. 2 Southington in the Class LL final on Friday or Saturday at a time and site to be announced.
