Donovan Clingan announced he will be joining the UConn Huskies men’s basketball program Friday via his social media accounts.

A rising senior at Bristol Central, Clingan was a four-star recruit and just completed his official visit to Storrs on Friday.

“To all the coaches who have coached me and all the trainers who have trained me, thank you for pushing me to be not only a good player, but also a better person,” Clingan said on his Instagram. “With that being said, it was a hard decision, but I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at the University of Connecticut!”

Clingan recently took home the Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year after a junior season that saw the 7-footer averaged 27.3 points, 17.2 rebounds, 5.8 blocks and 3.1 assists. Central finished the season as CCC champions with a 15-0 record.

“He enjoyed his visits, but he did not want to string along anymore coaches,” Central head coach Tim Barrette said. “He enjoyed his time, but he’s not about the expensive dinners and the things that they do for kids [on recruiting visits]. That’s just not him.”

Clingan had narrowed down his college list to eight schools this past spring and had already completed visits to Michigan, Syracuse, and Ohio State. Providence, Notre Dame, Rutgers and Georgetown were planned visits before Friday’s announcement.

His plan was to have this decision made before the start of his final basketball season with the Rams, but his official visit to the Huskies this week was the final step in confirming the school that remained atop his list of choices. Staying close to home and representing his area has always been important to him.

“When he walked in the gym at UConn he knew it was the right fit,” Barrette said. “Every time he walked in [on an] unofficial visit or official visit, he knew that was the place he should be.”
