Sports Roundup: Both Bristol schools pull off two-point wins to starts season

BRISTOL - The Bristol Central boys basketball team survived a late comeback from Avon to start its 2021 season with a win. Junior center Donovan Clingan had 35 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Sean Wininger had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Damain Glasper added a career-high 21 to lead Central to the win.

The Rams broke an early 15-15 tie to take a 51-32 halftime edge and led by 20 after three periods. But Avon scored the first 13 points of the fourth quarter and eventually pulled even at 72-72 with two minutes to play before the Rams were able to pull away. Avon scored 30 points in the final period led by Jack Hall who had 15 of his 29 points in the last quarter. The Falcons were hot from three-point range with 12 in the game and four in the final period.

The Rams will travel to face crosstown rival Bristol Eastern on Friday.

Bristol Eastern 56, Farmington 54: The Lancers outscored Farmington 24-6 over the final 6:10 of the game, and came away with a 56-54 win in the season opener for both teams.

The Lancers trailed Farmington 48-32 with 6:10 to go and came back for the win. Trini Otero hit a three-pointer with 2.8 seconds to play to cap the comeback.

Otero scored 7 points in the quarter, Elijah Parent hit three three-pointers and scored eight points in the period, and Axel Fernandez scored two buckets for five points to lead the comeback.


Goodwin Tech 40, Vinal Tech 15: The Gladiators start their season with an easy win as they hold Vinal Tech to 15 total points, including none in the fourth quarter.

Megan Lukeszewski led the way for Goodwin tech, scoring as many points as the opposing team and tying the Hawks with a trio of three-pointers.

Next up for the Gladiators is a Thursday home game against Prince Tech.


Farmington 94, Bristol 91: The Bristol boys swim co-op dropped a very close meet to Farmington, but displayed a strong start to the season after just two weeks of practice. Bristol won 10 of the 12 events despite having just 16 swimmers on the roster and posted 17 best times in the meet.

Bristol opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay from Gabriel Bartolome, Colton Litwinczyk, Mikel Palaj and Aidan Collins. That was the first of four wins on the day for Bartolome who also touched the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke and the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Litwinczyk and Collins were also in the freestyle relay and Litwinczyk was also a four-time winner on the day, with his solo victories coming in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke.

Palaj also won two solo events and two relays, winning the 200-yard freestyle relay with Drew Fries, Davis Kroll and Noah Taylor. Palaj also showed his versatility with wins in the 50-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle.

Taylor closes out the winning for Bristol with a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. The team will look to continue improving its times and getting a team win Feb. 17 against the Platt/Maloney co-op.
