ROUNDUP: Bristol Central baseball a win from tourney qualification; St. Paul softball wins walk-off thriller

BRISTOL - The Bristol Central baseball team took down Avon 12-3 at Muzzy Field behind two hits and two runs apiece from Austin Brown, Gavin Greger, Jay Dias and Evan Bouchard on Wednesday.

Central (7-9) took a 2-1 edge after the first inning and an eight-run explosion in the second gave it a commanding lead.

Sean Wininger pitched scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh.

Norwich Free Academy 3, Bristol Eastern 0: In a pitcher’s duel between NFA’s Brian Miskiewicz and Eastern’s Trevor Mays (seven hits, four strikeouts, no walks in a 71-pitch, complete-game effort), NFA (10-8) won by picking up an unearned run in the first and adding single runs in the fourth and fifth.

St. Paul 13, Ansonia 1 (5 innings): It was a slow start for the Falcons (14-4), who got out to a 2-0 lead after two innings but exploded for six runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth.

Winning pitcher Walker Sharp pitched five innings, allowing only one unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Shaun Remillard finished 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and one run, and Chris Mills went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Ryan Parent (2-for-3 with one RBI and one run) and Ryan Daniels (2-for-4 with three RBI and one run) each contributed to the win.


St. Paul 6, Farmington 5: Rebecca Nerbonne’s towering fly ball to left-center plated Janessa Gonzalez for a win in 10 innings.

Gonzalez led off the 10th with a double down the left-field line, and she was bunted over to third by Cari Marchak to set up Nerbonne’s game-winner. Nerbonne finished with three hits, including the game-tying RBI in the fifth.

Abby Poirot (11-4) picked up the win for the Falcons (15-4), firing 18 strikeouts in 10 innings.

Bristol Central 8, East Hartford 3: On senior day for the Rams (10-7), Kayla Beaulieu and Gianna Annelli each shined with a double and RBI single, respectively. Gwen Torreso roped two doubles for Central.

Terryville 18, Crosby 3 (6 innings): The Kangaroos (3-11) kept their slim state tournament hopes alive. Alexandria Michaud finished 3-for-5 with four RBI, two triples and three runs scored, Jessie Valentine went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run, and Emma Farrow finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, including a home run.


Falcons advance: The St. Paul girls tennis team is moving on in the NVL Tournament. The Falcons defeated Woodland 5-2 in the quarterfinals as Ximena Varela-Marin, Nicole Kempes and Alexis Piechowski won in singles.

Tessa Rogers and Alexis Carabetta and Alexis Wozdusiewcz and Violet Rodriguez won in doubles. St. Paul will face Naugatuck in the semifinals on Thursday.

Bristol Central 5, Windsor 2: Abby Gorneault and Danielle Carey nabbed wins out of the No. 1 and 4 singles spots, and all three of the Rams’ doubles pairings won their matches (Erica O’Connor and Kristina Pasqua; Ava McCann and Julia Radek; Sam Chapman and Izabella Radek).


St. Paul 162, Wolcott 207: The Falcons (9-4, 9-2 NVL) took down Wolcott (5-8) behind Michael Dolce’s round of 35. Ryne Salius (39), Chris Millerick (42) and Jeremy Rinaldi (46) also scored for St. Paul.


St. Paul 6, Northwest Catholic 5: The Falcons won their 12 consecutive game, led by five saves from Bella Peterson and six saves by Alexis Tierpack. They were led on offense by Emma Cretella and Catherine Ciampi with two goals apiece. Tori Bosco and Greta Panke each added a goal as well.
