Roundup: St. Paul softball takes early lead, never looks back for victory at Torrington

TORRINGTON - The St. Paul softball team took a first inning lead and never looked back for a 4-1 victory at Torrington on Tuesday afternoon.

Katrina Roy had three hits for St. Paul (5-1), with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Jessica Persechino (3-0) got the win on the mound and hit a triple in the game. Janessa Gonzalez also tripled, while Cari Marchak hit a double for the Falcons.

Julia Fritz took the loss for Torrington (1-5).

Middletown 14, Bristol Central 3: The Rams were outslugged on the road, falling to 2-4 for the season. Middletown collected 17 hits in the game.


St. Paul 10, Torrington 4: Timely hitting helped the Falcons (5-1) to another victory, as Torrington (1-5) committed four errors on Tuesday.

Walker Sharp earned the win, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts to pick up his second win of the season.

Chris Mills powered a home run and a double with three RBI and a run scored, and Julian Thayer finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.


Berlin 5, Bristol Eastern 2: The Lancers got wins from their top two singles players, Kelly Simpson (6-1, 6-0) and Danielle Bairrington (6-3, 6-0), but could not win a set in any of the other matches.

Bristol Eastern fell to 1-4 (0-1 in CCC South play).

Watertown 4, St. Paul 3: The Falcons were defeated by visiting Watertown at Page Park in a close contest, falling to 4-2 for the season.

St. Paul’s Ximena Varela-Marin defeated Sarah Cipriano at No. 1 singles, 8-6, while teammate Nicole Kempes topped Bianca Way in the No. 3 spot, 8-4.

In doubles, the Falcons’ No. 2 team of Tessa Rogers and Alexis Carabetta beat Lira Cenka and Sophia Charbonneau, 8-1. The No. 1 doubles team of Grace Carabetta and Lydia Feng fell in a tiebreaker.


St. Paul 175, Seymour 214: Ryne Salius led the way for the Falcons with a round of 39 at Chippanee Golf Club (par 35), as St. Paul improved to a perfect 3-0 on the season.

Michael Dolce (41), Jeremy Rinaldi (45) and Jordan Rinaldi (50) also scored for the Falcons.

Seymour (1-2) was led by Cody Guillette’s round of 47.


Rams split meet: Bristol Central defeated Platt 112-38, but fell to Berlin 78-68 in a home tri-meet.

First place finishers for the Rams were: Adalia Malick (400 meters, 1:02.98), Gabrielle Calfe (triple jump, 32-4.75), Kaiya Alexander (shot put, 32-10), Camile Attle (pole vault, 6-6) and the 4x400 relay (M. Hinton, E. Stone, S. Veronsi and Calfe) in 4:24.

Bristol Central is now 2-1 overall, 1-0 in the conference.


Rams sweep: Bristol Central defeated Berlin 104-46 and took down Platt 114-36 in a home tri-meet.

First-place finishers for the Rams were: Jose Navedo (110 hurdles, 16.78; 300 hurdles, 42.83), Nate DeAngelo (1,600 meters, 4:50.5), Ramon Ambert (400 meters, 52.16), Jose Ramirez (800 meters, 2:03.38), Mark Petrosky (3,200 meters, 10:04), Galen Hickey (high jump, 5-2; triple jump, 40-6.5), Luke Schilling (pole vault, 10-6), Jakob Salinas (javelin, 142-1), the 4x400 relay team (Ramirez, Ambert, Rivera-Ortiz, Hickey) in 3:39 and the 4x800 relay team (Petrosky, Devin Flores, Freve, Ramirez) in 8:42.


Lancers tie New Britain: Bristol Eastern played to a draw with New Britain, 229-229, on Tuesday at Chippenee Golf Course. Mollie Lewis was the medalist with a score of 52. It was the second match in a row Lewis earned medalist honors. The Lancers (1-0-1) are back in action Thursday against Maloney at home.
