Sports Roundup: Bristol Eastern girls tennis beats Bristol Central

BRISTOL - It was a battle of cross-town rivals Friday afternoon as the Bristol Central girls tennis team travelled to Bristol Eastern.

The Lancers came away with the win at home in a tightly contested 4-3 match and the doubles teams proved to be the difference.

Kelly Simpson and Kasey Simpson (No. 1 doubles), Tina Guo and Leah Mastroianni (No. 2 doubles) and Sophie Johnsky and Valerie Blanchard (No. 3 singles) all won for Bristol Eastern in a doubles sweep.

Alexis Waag defeated Bristol Central’s Mersadez Chaleman at No. 4 singles 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

The Rams top three singles players, Abby Goralski, Abby Gorneault and Alex Goralski continued their strong seasons leading Bristol Central.

Abby Goralski defeated Amy Bhagaloo 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Gorneault defeated Julia O’Leary 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Alex Goralski beat Danielle Barrington 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

Bristol Eastern improved to 7-9 on the season while Bristol Central finished its season 5-11.


Bristol Eastern 5, Plainville 0: It was all Jagger Duquette Friday afternoon at Muzzy Field.

It took an hour and a half for Bristol Eastern baseball’s junior starting pitcher to shut down Plainville’s offense in the 5-0 Lancers’ win.

Duquette pitched six innings and allowed two hits while striking out eight batters and issuing no free passes.

Cory Fradette relieved Duquette in the seventh inning and retired the side with a pair of strikeouts to go with it.

Noah Hickey started the offensive scoring for Bristol Eastern with a home run in the bottom of the second inning to put the Lancers up 1-0.

In the third inning Matt D’Amato opened it up with a double and Mac Goulet drove him in with an RBI single. Later in the inning Goulet scored on a wild pitch to go up 3-0.

With the win the Lancers moved to 10-8 on the season and have two games remaining - Maloney and Bristol Central.

Terryville 8, Litchfield 1: The Kangaroos had a strong pitching performance from Dominic Zappone and some big offensive performances out of Mike Tiscia, Albert Molina, Anthony Pires and Nick Ieronimo.

Zappone threw a complete game allowing one earned run, seven hits, striking out a pair and walking three.

Tiscia had three hits, an RBI and one run scored. Molina added a pair of doubles with 2 RBI and one run. Pires and Ieronimo each had a pair of hits and a double. Ieronimo drove in two runs and scored one. Pires drove in a run and scored once.

Terryville improved to 7-12 on the season.


Terryville 14, Litchfield 0: Needing one win to qualify for the Class S tournament, the Kangaroos freshman starting pitcher Tiffany Pires spun a gem on the mound to make sure the team reached its first postseason in five years.

Pires went the distance allowing one hit while striking out eight batters and walking one to earn the win. At the plate Pires was equally impressive with a pair of hits and two runs scored.

Offensively Terryville had 18 hits and struck out just four times. Senior catcher Amy Ieronimo hit a home run and drove in a pair of runs.

Alex Michaud and Olivia Tuohy each scored a run as the No. 1 and No. 2 hitters. Michaud finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in. Tuohy went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Dominique Picard and Lacy Lyons paced the bottom half of the Kangaroos batting order.

Lyons went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and 4 RBI. Picard finished 3-for-3 with 4 RBI and one run scored.

Jessie Valentine (1-for-1, RBI), Maria Cesare (1-for-3, run scored), Emma Farrow (1-for-1), Maisie Festa (1-for-2, two runs scored) and Alexis Fitzherbert (1-for-1, run scored) completed the offensive explosion.

Bristol Eastern 8, Plainville 0: Erin Girard threw a no-hitter for the Lancers to take the first game of the doubleheader.

Girard had 12 strikeouts and faced the minimum number of batters.

“She had great command and mixed speeds well keeping hitters off balance,” Lancers coach Scott Redman said.

Riley Giblin went 3-for-4 with three doubles and Alyssa Hackling went 2-for-4 with a double.

Bristol Eastern 14, Plainville 0: The Lancers did most of their damage early on scoring 12 of their 14 runs in the first three innings.

Taylor Keegan went 3-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored, Paige McLaughlin went 4-for-5, Jenna Winters went 3-for-4.

With the two wins Bristol Eastern improved to 13-4 on the season with one game remaining against Bristol Central.
