BRISTOL - The Bristol Eastern boys basketball teamâ€™s playoff hopes remain alive.
It just came down to the buzzer to do so.
Mac Goulet drove to the basket for the game-winning score as the Lancers beat Derby 44-42 on Saturday.
Goulet finished his night with a double-double, leading all scorers with 21 points, while pulling down 11 rebounds.
Elijah Parent added 11 points for Bristol Eastern (6-11), which also got strong contributions from Tyler Mason, Cam Tate and Bryce Curtin.
â€śWe found a way to win down the stretch with great effort on both ends of the floor,â€ť Lancers head coach Bunty Ray said. â€śThis gives us an opportunity to try to reach our goal of making the postseason. It also shows that we are improving which is equally important.â€ť
Trailing by as much as six points in the fourth quarter, Parent hit three 3-points to help keep pace with Derby with both team trading baskets throughout most of the quarter.
Bristol Eastern will now have to win two of its remaining three games to qualify for the Division III tournament. The Lancers next game will be at home against Plainville Tuesday night.
In its final tune up before the Class L meet, the Bristol Central wrestling team made sure to have a strong showing.
The Rams finished the weekend placing seventh out of 23 teams at the CCC Championships help Friday and Saturday at Berlin.
Bristol Central had six wrestlers place in the top six of their respective classes.
Mike Guzman - the teamâ€™s only finalist - placed second after falling to East Hartford's Isaiah Jiminian in the finals.
Fellow senior, Damian Mahaffy placed third. His only loss came against Southington's Paul Calo, the reigning New England Champion, in the semifinals.
John Duncan (285) and Mason Hale (132) each placed fourth in their respective weight classes. Adam Ward (113) and Andrew Beaucar (152) completed the Ramsâ€™ place-winners with fifth place finishes.
Jake Aldi (106), Jason Feto (126), Andrew Mahffy (145) also won multiple matches for the Rams.
Bristol Central will now host the Class L State Tournament this Friday and Saturday.
