BRISTOL - Down 34-25 early in the fourth quarter, the Bristol Central girls basketball team was giving Bristol Eastern a game down the stretch, something that hasn’t happened much in recent memory.

Holding a slim lead, Lancers senior guards Hannah Maghini and Miranda Janick took over.

The combination led Bristol Eastern on a 13-0 run in the fourth quarter, which put away the Rams in the Lancers’ 49-31 victory on Thursday night.

Janick scored five of her 16 points in the final quarter, while Maghini added four of her 16 in the fourth.

“It’s always fun to play them,” Maghini said. “Everyone comes out, friends and family. It was just a good time.”

The game’s first three minutes couldn’t have gotten off to a better start for Bristol Central, as the Rams held the Lancers scoreless and were up 2-0 on a pair of free throws made by I’deara Gordon on their opening possession.

While it started in favor of Bristol Central, it didn’t take long for Bristol Eastern to find its groove.

Maghini got off to a slow start with just two points in the first but was picked up Janick, who played a key role in the 14-5 first quarter with seven points. Along with Janick, Jordan Ouellette and Avery Arbuckle each added two points.

Going into the second quarter Bristol Eastern held a 21-8 lead over the Rams but Bristol Central closed in with a 5-3 run to close out the first half down 24-13.

Maghini turned it on in the second quarter with eight points and the right corner 3-point shot was her spot as she hit a pair of 3s from it.

The third quarter was evenly matched.

Bristol Eastern got off to a 4-0 run in the quarter behind baskets from Ouellette and Janick.

Bristol Central’s Sarah Guerin and Allison Jessie kept the Rams in the game though as the duo scored eight of the 10 points in the quarter.

Guerin and Jessie each finished with a team-high nine points in the game.

After the 10-10 third the Lancers lead was 34-23 going into the fourth.

Guerin scored the first two points of the quarter to bring the game within single digits at 34-25 but that was the closest Bristol Central got before the big 13-0 run to seal the win for the Lancers.

For Bristol Eastern, Cassandra Doyon entered the game with the score 43-25.

Doyon, a senior that doesn’t see much playing time banked a jumper in and the crowd erupted as the Lancers were on their way to victory.

“Cassie is a senior and she works hard every day,” Bristol Eastern head coach Tony Floyd. “And the kids were just glad to see her get an opportunity to play. She got in there and took advantage of it and did a really good job today she hit a couple big shots. She’s probably the heart and soul of this team. She keeps them together and she’s very enthusiastic. She always picks up the kids and is an excellent leader as a senior. Everybody was glad to see her have some success out there.”

The win continues the Bristol Eastern run in the series, as Bristol Central hasn’t beaten the Lancers in over a decade.

“It was really big because we’ve been preparing for them for awhile,” Janick said. “We try not to get our hopes up or anything. We try to go out there and play just as hard as every other game.”

For the Rams, this season has been tough as they still are searching for their first win.

“We can’t make free throws, can’t make shots and we turn the ball over too much,” Bristol Central head coach Steve Gaudet said. “But they work hard and give me everything they got. They bust their tails. On the defensive end they work as hard as they can. We can’t buy one right now.”
