Coe delivers strong start as Bristol Blues lock up No. 2 seed in FCBL playoffs

BRISTOL - Garrett Coe’s usage during his short stint with the Bristol Blues this summer has been minimal, as the 2019 graduate of The Gunnery and incoming UConn freshman pitcher has been taking summer school classes in Storrs.

That has meant the left-hander has been limited to strictly weekend games with the Blues while gearing up for his college career to start.

There were no ill effects of Coe not being with the team as often, however, as Muzzy Field fans saw the southpaw deliver a big performance on the mound Sunday evening to lead the Blues to a 10-3 victory over the North Shore Navigators. The win in the regular season finale locks up the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the FCBL playoffs.

Coe earned the win with seven innings of two-run ball as he allowed just three hits, no walks and fired six strikeouts. His offense delivered 12 hits, including key performances from Austin White (2-for-2 with a double, four walks and four runs scored), Christian Beal (2-for-4, three RBI) and Kasey Bass (3-for-5).

The Blues (31-23) got out to a 4-0 lead over the Navigators (30-24) after two innings, and Zeke Diamond’s RBI single in the fourth gave his club a five-run cushion.

The Blues broke open the game with a four-run fifth inning, as Beal delivered a bases-loaded two-run double, and a red-hot Dylan Reynolds extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a two-run single for a 9-0 lead.

Sean Lawlor’s two-run home run in the sixth was the only offense North Shore could muster up off Coe, who was relieved by Peyton Stephens, who allowed one run in the eighth, and Andrew Marrero, who threw a shutout ninth.

Coe’s strong outing came at the perfect time for the Blues, who will get the day off Monday before starting a best-of-three series against either North Shore, the Worcester Bravehearts or the Pittsfield Suns. The team now projects to have a rested bullpen with their starting rotation set up for the postseason after not having to expend arms due to Coe’s performance.
